Day Fifteen

October 16, 2023

50 degrees and rainy … all day

almost clear of the tires

what happened to day 14? it was a day of rest.

here’s the walkaround of the structure as of lunch today.

here’s a look at the outer greenhouse wall progression. the spaces between the tires will be exterior doors, with windows sitting atop where the tires are now. that concrete pour is floor level.

and if i’m standing in one of those door frames looking to the rear of the structure, i can see the area where we’ll pour concrete for one of the 3 buttresses. you can see the base and the rebar that will run through the buttress.

and the wooden form that gets mounted to the back tire wall. we’ll pour the concrete into that form. the fat end of that form goes up, near the top of the wall.

speaking of concrete, that’s where i spent most of my day. the rainy, wet concrete station. i may have said this before, but the recipe is - put some water in the mixer, then two 5-gallon buckets of gravel, 50 lbs of cement, two 5-gallon buckets of sand and then let it mix. and while it’s mixing, you can refill the buckets with gravel and sand, and split another 100 lb bag of cement in two.

and if you’re working the cement station, then you’re working with alex (alexandra), and she likes her music loud!

and here are a couple of detail photos, for those who like that sort of thing.

this is the first rafter, you can see down into what will be a bedroom. the two people are standing at the back of what will be the roof.

the front of that rafter, atop the beam that runs the width of the earthship.
