roof and doors and windows

framing starts

well i learned that crew does NOT hang out every day after the work, just on fridays. and i was there for it last friday, so … i haven’t missed anything. : )

today we prepped the top row of tires for the coming bond beam and the beginning of the framing that will become the roof. in the picture above you can see nathan smoothing out some concrete that’s filling a gap between tires.

on any row but the top, if there was a gap between tires, we’d squish up a tire and force it into the gap. gaps occur when a tire isn’t able to fully span the two tires beneath it. appropriately, these tires are referred to as Squishies, and there are a couple rules with regard to them:

  • no squishes in the top row

  • ‘nobody puts squishy in a corner’ - they can only be on a straight run

okay, enough tire talk . you all have probably heard enough about tires.

it occurred to me last night while talking with john that this build is a lot like getting a show ready. there are a lot of people doing a lot of different things and over the course of time it all comes together. there’s that same sense of community.

speaking of community, that subject comes up a lot. there are 6 principles that are fundamental to earthships - things like using recycled materials, harvesting your own water, etc. (go to earthship.com to see all 6). but there’s also this other thing that seems to come along with them - a sense of community. and personally, that’s a dream of mine.

i’d like to get enough land so that everyone i want to grow old and live the rest of my days with can come and live there as well. i’m not sure how that’s going to come to pass, but i sure would like it to happen. imagine if i could walk over to your place, andrew , and say “hey, you wanna binge watch all of Firefly today?”

i didn’t really get any pictures today. there’s one that shows you the cluster of tiny homes that are being built on the same property by the same owner.

then a quick video - taken from atop the wall - of the framing of doors and windows on the inside glass wall.
